Home of the Hoosiers Milan IN & Clarksville, IN

Just across the Ohio River in Indiana we found great day trips. Full of wondrous wins, wilderness walks, winery wine, and worldly wonders.

Milan ’54 Hoosiers Basketball Museum – 201 W Carr St. Milan, IN – milan54.org

We started our day n Milan, IN a hometown you’d expect to see in 1954. We visited the museum full of memorabilia from the famous movie ‘Hoosiers’, and artefacts from the real 1954 High School Team. When you walk into and around this small museum you are transported back in time. You can feel the pride and excitement that brought this tired little town to life that one season so long ago. I am not a huge sports fan myself but my heart really went out to this town, those kids, and their journey. I have a soft spot for seeing rural kids winning & making a mark in the world, if even in that one moment in time. The nice lady working was knowledgeable and informative. They have worked to preserve the history. There is also an adjoining barber shop that is preserved just as it closed closed back in the day. Frozen in time. She let us walk around the barber shop also.

HOG ROCK CAFE – 101 E Carr St. Milan, IN – www.hogrock.org Just a short walk down the street we found a this restaurant / bar with a large menu. A great spot to stop for lunch.

Clifty Falls State Park – 1501 Green Rd Madison, IN

Just off the Ohio River we visited this Indiana State Park, full of natural beauty, multiple water falls, and history. The park fairly new accommodations, with almost a resort feel. Several paths that are well maintained, a Bat Cave, old Railroad tunnels, swimming and picnic areas.

A couple wineries to check out along the way…

Fiekerts Homestead Wines – 412 N High St St Rising Sun, IN The Ridge Winery – 298 Hwy 156 VeVay, IN

If you have not yet stayed at a Home 2 Suites, I highly recommend them. Each room we have stayed, the standard rooms are like mini suites. With a Kitchen, full size refrigerator, Microwave, Dishes, Silver wear, a Sink and counter space to prepare those cost saving in room meals and snacks. The Desk area is great for those ‘work from homers’ and also rolls out to become a nice table for dinner or guests to stop in. The curtain divides the seating area from the bed, for up all nighters enjoying a movie on the large TV.

What a unique find. A park named the Falls of Ohio in Indiana. Just across from Louisville, along the Ohio River, you will discover a path once walked by Lewis and Clark. Meriwether Lewis met William Clark at the Falls of Ohio. I love finding sites such as this and wondering what it must have been like standing in that very spot some 217 years ago. Also did you know the Ohio River is a great place to discover fossils. Certain times of the year, when the River is lower, you can walk out in area of the river bed and see fossils, This park is home to the LARGEST Exposed Fossil Bed in the WORLD. I’m not exaggerating it is cool, look it up at: www.fallsofohio.org

We rounded out free time by visiting nearby nostalgic candy company and finding a huge old clock at what was the Colgate factory. The candy store is located on a cute street with a neighboring shops, if you have time to explore more small town treasurers.

The main reason surrounding this trip was to meet our friends to say good bye to a friend. She left this life too young, and I hope she is reunited with her mom who had gone before her and that her heart is restored. Maybe that is why this trip of beautiful nature, fine wine, thought provoking history and peaceful views was just what we needed.

I know it’s Covid – Stay Home. But when you are going to be out anyway, why not enjoy a walk in the park on an unbeaten path, or sit outdoors at a winery and take in the views, or reap the benefits from taking a drive.
